Our Obstacle Crushers classes begin with an in depth one on one evaluation with Dr.Kristin Doelitsch, a Physical Therapist. She will give a comprehensive examination of you child's development from birth to present day and look at every aspect of their functioning as a whole. She will look at them from head to toe in a holistic approach to total body wellness. Of particular importance is their gait pattern and the structure of their feet/ankles and how this impacts their functioning. She will assess for head shape irregularities and neck posture to ensure that growth and symmetry are optimal. She screens every child for Craniosynostosis, which she is finding is a major concern that is affecting children and often going missed by pediatricians and specailists alike. If any concerns arise during these measurements, she has a network of specialists in the area to whom she will refer as needed who will work in conjuction with her to find true healing and optimal function. She will make recommendations for foot/ankle orthotics where deemed appropriate or particular shoes as needed. Having a proper platform to launch from is crucial to a child being able to interact with their environment to the best of their ability and will greatly impact their success in Obstacle Crushers classes. Dr.Kristin is trained and certified in lower leg Dynamic Flex Casting to correct lower limb deformities/abnormalities in a non conventional way. The focus is on correcting lower limb alignment so that the child can strengthen in proper anatomical alignment and therefore improve their function and ability to stand and walk. Whether they pronate, supinate or toe walk, Dynamic Flex Casting is able to correct the foot and ankle bone alignment and set them up for successful ambulation. This works well as part of MTF Alignment Therapy. Dr Kristin focuses heavily on the alignment of the entire body as a primary means of helping to improve a child's overall function. Trained by Dr.Maria Ferrer at Ferrer Pediatrics, this type of therapy aims to increase a child's total body alignment and therefore improve their function. Movement Inhibition Therapy is also a key component to Dr.Kristin's approach. This type of therapy addresses primitive infant reflexes and assures that the child can move with purpose and intention and helps to eliminate the primitive reflexes through immobilization of the limbs and specific exercises.
Dr.Kristin is also trained in TASES level 2 and incorporates electrical stimulation into her treatment plans when necessary to improve spasticity, increase muscle strength and control and enhance function.
As you can see, Dr.Kristin is trained in a variety of techniques which she custom selects and tailors a custom treatment plan for each child. There is no cookie cutter therapy provided here as every child is unique and requires a costom approach depending on their specific needs.
If neurological concerns or severe weakness are present, she will recommend DMI (Dymamic Movement Intervention) Therapy. She is a certified Intro C level DMI Therapist and offers both 2 week intensives and private DMI sessions 2-3 times a week to continue to advance skills . The custom treatment plan will be tailored to your child's specific needs, whatever those may be. She always combines DMI Therapy with other approaches as she feels the combination is where children improve the most. She finds only performing one type of intervention is limiting and not in the child's best interest.
Once a treatment plan is determined, Dr.Kristin will custom select the perfect program available for your child based on their gross motor development and social skills development. It is the philosophy here at Obstacle Crushers that children inherently need to move and meet their physical needs daily. Whether they are appropriate for DMI therapy or group classes, their individual needs will be met. We would like to help facilitate that for you the parents who often times find it challenging to meet the high energy needs of their children in a uniquely challenging way.
Dr.Kristin created Obstacle Crushers after working in an outpatient pediatric setting for many years. She discovered a large gap in treatment that needed a solution. She became frustrated when often times a child's insurance company dictated how long or how often they were allowed to participate in gross motor skills building. She felt like this was nowhere near enough time to really and truly make a difference for these kids and this negatively impacts their development. However, she also noticed something remarkable. When she placed a child with a peer, suddenly their motivation and focus improved. They responded infinitely better when participating in challenging gross motor skills with other children. Suddenly, these children would magically transform and she would find much more success and more activities were accomplished in a shorter amount of time. This is where the concept of Obstacle Crushers was born. She knew that a fitness model based off of peer interaction would help motivate these kids to all reach their full potential in ways their parents had only dreamed of before.
Another driving force behind her desire to create Obstacle Crushers is her understanding of the parenting side of having a neurodiverse child. She herself has 2 children with complex needs and she has navigated the difficult parenting world of having a child that just doesn't fit into any of the boxes. She has been in your shoes, wanting to find a program where he could interact with other children in a fun, safe, and active environment. All children need rigorous exercise for their high energy needs and much like a sport, this needs to be done frequently and for longer periods of time than the typical constructs of a traditional therapy setting. This is where Obstacle Crushers stands out from the rest.

Since we are different than skilled Physical Therapy, we do not take insurance. This would limit our overall philosophy and insurance does not cover group exercise classes or DMI therapy or flex casting. We encourage children who need it to work with a skilled PT in conjuction to Obstacle Crushers classes for one on one therapy which can be run through insurance. Obstacle Crushers is an outside the box approach to holistic therapy and is a highly individualized product. It functions as a supplement to traditional PT in order to increase overall function.
